AUSTRALIAN FICTION: Sofie Laguna backlist
Brief:
Sofie Laguna is a multi-award winning Australian novelist who writes for both YA (young adult) and adult audiences. This redesign of her adult backlist, starting with the three books listed below, is designed to move away from the slightly ‘YA’ feels on previous editions, seeking a broader audience for these unsettling, profound and confronting Australian stories. The covers should communicate something of the individual books, but still hold together well as a recognisable series. We’re looking for a series design that will work for both Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day shoppers.
Laguna’s writing has been described as “masterful and devastating”, “raw, real and heartbreaking” and “utterly addictive”. Rebecca Slater writes of Laguna’s writing: “At the moment when other authors might give in, go soft, let their world shift and open up for their characters, Laguna holds on tight, pushing her characters through the small and unforgiving spaces she has created for them, like waters rushing through the narrow banks of the Murray, squeezing through until they feel as though they might choke. But always, in the very darkness of her tales there is light, there is breath, and above all, there is voice.”
